Dear Friends:

Putting a face with a name is sometimes a challenge. Our new photo directory will be very helpful in meeting this challenge, especially if everyone signs up to have their picture taken. As has been advertised, there is no cost to sit for your portrait, you will receive a free 8x10 of the picture you choose to have included in the directory, and you will receive a free directory as well. The “ catch ” is an Olan Mills representative will offer to sell you additional photographs suitable for framing, Christmas cards or posting on refrigerators. You are under no obligation, but the company does put out a superior product and many people do like to have professional portraits done periodically. Bottom line – make sure you have signed up for a sitting on September 11, 12 or 27. We need you to do this to make our directory complete. Thank-you.

Speaking of “ putting a face with a name, ” it is interesting that although we each have a personal mental portrait of what Jesus looked like, the fact is we truly don ’ t have a face for that precious name. There is no physical description of the Christ in any of the four gospels. We don ’ t know if he was short or tall, stocky or slight, light or dark complected, or anything else. The popular Warner Sallman portrait of Christ depicts Jesus with auburn hair, blue tinged eyes and Caucasian racial features. We can be pretty sure whatever the Lord did look like, he didn ’ t look like this imagination.

But guess what! When you receive your new photo directory, you will be able to put a face with the name of Christ after all. Jesus will be pictured in us, the Church, the Body of Christ. We bear the name Christian and it is in our faces, our witness and our work, that others will see Jesus. This is not imagination as much as it is solid theology.

Each of us bears the Divine image. Let it shine as you say “ cheese ” for the camera, and as you say, “ Blessed be the name of the Lord! ”
