Dear Friends,
Several weeks ago John Mossel spoke on the importance of remembering the church in one’s will. This is a way to live into the beatitude stated in Hebrews 14: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord for they rest from their labors and their good works follow them.”
Westminster received a bequest this month from the estate of Virginia Joy. Virginia was a member of Westminster and prominent realtor and community leader in the city. She died in October 2007 and John Dean did the services at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin where Ms. Joy lived out her final years. We are thankful for her Christian commitment, thoughtfulness and generosity in providing for her church family through her estate planning.
What a blessing to receive this bequest of sixty-two thousand dollars and I hope it can be the start of a new Memorial / Endowment fund. Although we are currently running a deficit for the year, I trust that deficit can be made up with pledge pay-ups, second mile giving and special gifts so that we can truly establish a growing endowment fund which can be invested to return income as part of an over-all strategy for dealing with the financial challenges of the church today and in the future.
I am told Virginia Joy was a tall woman with a commanding presence, but also “loved to giggle.” There must have been joy in her living and in her giving. May her memory be blessed.
Let there also be joy in our living and in our giving. During this time of making our stewardship commitments for the coming year, let us be thankful for God’s grace and abundant gifts which we daily enjoy, and turn with a self-same joy and gratitude to see that Christ’s mission through Westminster is liberally underwritten.
